8 Best Sustainability Consultants for Carbon Accounting in 2026 (UK & Global)

If you're looking for a sustainability consultant to measure your organisation's carbon footprint, build a reduction plan or meet a reporting requirement, there are plenty of options - but they are not interchangeable.
Some firms are global sustainability consultancies working with large multinationals. Others specialise in technical areas such as engineering, carbon markets or product footprints. And increasingly, businesses can choose a software-led model that combines carbon accounting technology with expert support.
The right choice depends on the size and complexity of your organisation, what you need the work for, and whether you need a one-off project or an annual process you can maintain.
We've compared eight leading sustainability consultancies and carbon accounting providers operating in the UK and internationally, looking at what each does best, where each has limitations, and the type of organisation each is best suited to.
Quick answer: For large organisations with complex operations, physical assets, international reporting requirements or assurance needs, a major sustainability consultancy may be appropriate. For SMEs and mid-market businesses that need an accurate carbon footprint, credible reporting and expert support without the cost and complexity of a large consultancy engagement, a carbon accounting platform like Seedling can be a better fit.
1. Seedling
Best for: SMEs and mid-market businesses that need accurate carbon accounting and expert support without a large “time and materials” based consultancy engagement.
Seedling combines carbon accounting software with one-to-one support from a carbon expert. It therefore offers a “best of both worlds” approach: an intuitive platform that does the heavy lifting, with time-saving tools like automations and in-built surveys; but with a sustainability expert always on hand to help with data queries, emission reduction initiatives, and reporting challenges.
The model is particularly suited to businesses that need to repeat their carbon accounting each year. Rather than commissioning a new footprinting project from scratch from a consultancy, the organisation can maintain its underlying data and methodology and update the carbon inventory as its business changes.
Strengths
- Full-scope carbon footprints covering Scopes 1, 2 and 3, aligned with the GHG Protocol.
- Activity-based data collection, including energy, travel and other operational data, rather than relying solely on spend estimates.
- Reporting support for requirements including SECR, PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plans, B Corp, EcoVadis, CDP, ISO 14064 and SBTi-aligned targets.
- One-to-one support from a carbon expert throughout the footprinting process.
- Supplier and employee survey tools that feed data into the carbon footprint.
- A software-led model that makes the underlying carbon inventory available to the business rather than leaving the work solely in a consultancy report.
- Published pricing and a model designed for ongoing annual carbon accounting.
Limitations
- Designed for businesses up to around 2,000 employees. Very large multinationals with complex group structures, extensive international operations or sophisticated assurance requirements may be better served by an enterprise consultancy.
- Focused specifically on carbon rather than broader environmental services such as ISO 14001 support and biodiversity assessments, or wider ESG services such as human rights due diligence or DEI support for HR teams.
Bottom line: Seedling is a strong fit for organisations that want more than a calculator but less than a traditional consultancy programme: an accurate, maintained carbon inventory with expert support alongside the software.
2. The Carbon Trust
Best for: large organisations that need a recognised certification mark to communicate with.
The Carbon Trust is a London-headquartered climate consultancy founded in 2001, originally funded through the UK's Climate Change Levy and now operating globally with more than 350 sustainability experts across six offices. Its work covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 footprinting including financed emissions, product life cycle assessment, target setting, transition planning and disclosure readiness. It also provides independent assurance of GHG footprints and runs its own certification schemes, including the Route to Net Zero Standard and a product carbon footprint label.
Strengths
- Independent GHG footprint verification delivered in-house, useful where the point of the work is external credibility.
- The Route to Net Zero Standard has three tiers, Taking Action, Advancing and Leading, so organisations can be recognised early and move up over time.
- Strong technical depth on Scope 3 and financed emissions, and the firm states it advised on drafting the GHG Protocol's Scope 3 measurement guidance.
- High name recognition with procurement teams, boards and consumers.
Limitations
- Measurement is delivered as consultancy projects rather than software you log into, so the same question applies as with any advisory model: what happens to your data between engagements.
- Pricing is not published. Scoping runs through a conversation.
- Client base skews to large corporates, financial institutions and government. A mid-market business needing a first full-scope footprint and a set of compliance reports is not the typical engagement.
3. SLR Consulting
Best for: asset-heavy businesses needing carbon alongside engineering/environmental work.
SLR is a global technical consultancy with more than 5,000 colleagues, 140+ office locations, 60+ technical disciplines and six operating regions. Its work spans advisory, planning and assessment, engineering and design, environmental and earth sciences, and digital services. Carbon work sits within its Climate Resilience & Net Zero solution, alongside climate risk and scenario analysis, physical adaptation planning, and sustainable finance advisory, plus a wider portfolio covering energy transition, natural capital, sustainable sourcing, waste and circularity.
Strengths
- A dedicated Climate & Energy Transition team of 300+ professionals delivering over 1,300 projects a year, backed by real engineering and site-level delivery rather than advice alone.
- Useful where decarbonisation needs to connect to physical assets, such as site-level audits, energy optimisation programmes or engineering design.
- Global reach across Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
Limitations
- Corporate GHG accounting sits inside a broader Climate Resilience & Net Zero offer, which itself sits inside a much wider technical consultancy. It is not the firm's sole focus.
- Oriented towards capital-intensive and asset-heavy sectors. An office-based professional services business needing a first footprint is not the typical client.
- Project-based engagement, which means the cost and process are heavier than a mid-market team usually needs for an annual GHG inventory.
4. South Pole
Best for: large multinationals needing carbon markets and renewable energy procurement.
South Pole is a climate consultancy and carbon project developer with over 500 experts in more than 20 countries and more than 20 years in the market. Its services cover disclosure and reporting, net zero targets and transition plans, renewable energy procurement including energy attribute certificates and PPAs, Scope 3 decarbonisation, carbon credits and CORSIA compliance for aviation. It also runs a digital climate platform, Luumo. Published clients include Nestlé, Swiss Re, UBS and the World Bank.
Strengths
- Deep expertise in carbon markets and project development, backed by two decades of transaction history.
- Strong renewable procurement capability, often the fastest route to cutting Scope 2 at scale.
- Global delivery, useful for groups reporting across multiple jurisdictions.
Limitations
- Strongest where credits and energy procurement are central. For a business whose immediate requirement is a UK carbon footprint and compliance-ready reporting, much of this broader capability may not be necessary.
- Enterprise-oriented client base and engagement model.
5. ClimatePartner
Best for: consumer brands needing product footprints and climate labelling.
ClimatePartner is a Munich-headquartered provider combining the ClimatePartner Hub platform with expert consulting. It covers corporate and product carbon footprints, SBTi target setting, CSRD reporting, supplier engagement through its network platform, climate project financing and its own ClimatePartner certified label. It states that over 6,000 companies work with it, including Boots, AXA, Vodafone and Essity.
Strengths
- Product carbon footprint capability is a real differentiator for manufacturers and consumer brands.
- Platform plus expert model, so data is managed digitally rather than in a one-off report.
- Support for EmpCo compliance, the EU rules tightening how environmental claims can be made on products, an area the firm has direct, hard-won experience in (see limitations).
Limitations
- The labelling and climate contribution model is central to the offer, which suits brands with a consumer-facing claim more than businesses driven by procurement compliance.
- Weighted towards EU and DACH markets, so UK-specific requirements such as SECR and PPN 006 are not its focus.
- Pricing is not published, so scoping requires a sales conversation.
6. ERM
Best for: large corporates needing sustainability advisory, assurance and transaction support.
ERM describes itself as the world's leading sustainability consultancy, with people in over 38 countries and territories. Its solutions run from climate and net zero through EHS management, capital projects and infrastructure, mergers and acquisitions, carbon markets, product stewardship, remediation and reporting and disclosure. ERM CVS, its assurance and certification arm, sits within the group, and the firm was named a Leader in Verdantix's Green Quadrant: Sustainability Consulting 2026 report, alongside several other large global firms.
Strengths
- Unmatched breadth across environment, health, safety, social and climate.
- In-house assurance and certification capability through ERM CVS.
- Strong transaction support for private equity and corporate M&A where climate risk affects deal value.
Limitations
- Enterprise pricing and an engagement model built around large programmes of work.
- Carbon footprinting is a small component of a very wide advisory offer.
- Unlikely to be a proportionate choice for a business measuring emissions for the first time.
7. transformacy
Best for: businesses focused on EcoVadis, B Corp and social value.
transformacy is a corporate sustainability consultancy with offices in Milton Park, Oxfordshire and Franklin, Tennessee. It is a certified B Corp and describes itself as one of the UK's leading EcoVadis Certified Consultants and Training Partners. Its six service lines are sustainability strategy, carbon and net zero, social value support, EcoVadis certification, B Corp certification and communications. Published client stories include Lysander achieving an EcoVadis Silver medal and Tiberone Technologies reaching Bronze in under two months.
Strengths
- Specific, demonstrable track record on EcoVadis scoring and B Corp certification.
- Social value expertise is genuinely useful given the 10% minimum weighting applied to UK central and local government contracts.
- Communications capability, which helps translate carbon data into something stakeholders will read.
Limitations
- Carbon is one of six service lines rather than the core product, so it is a broader ESG partner than a carbon specialist.
- No carbon platform on their site. Advisory work is described in terms of measurement, target setting and independent verification, so the emissions data likely sits in reports rather than in software the client can log into and maintain.
8. Anthesis
Best for: large/international organisations needing carbon alongside broader sustainability work.
Anthesis is a global sustainability consulting group founded in 2013, now operating across 23 countries and 44 offices with more than 1,500 experts. It has been a certified B Corp since 2021. Its solutions include net zero and decarbonisation, reporting and disclosure, nature, sustainable products and circularity, supply chains, carbon credits and projects, and its Anthesis Intelligence digital products. Its regulations hub covers CSRD, CBAM, EUDR, ESPR and packaging rules in detail. Published clients include Tesco, Unilever, Microsoft, Amazon and NHS Foundation Trusts.
Strengths
- One of the largest pools of dedicated sustainability specialists anywhere, which means deep bench strength on niche topics.
- Excellent free regulatory content, particularly on EU rules that catch UK businesses through their European operations.
- Strong life cycle assessment and circularity capability, and B Corp certified since 2021.
Limitations
- Breadth means carbon footprinting is one workstream among many rather than the product itself.
- Project-based pricing and scoping, so annual costs are less predictable than a subscription.
- Smaller and mid-market businesses may find the scope heavier and more expensive than the requirement warrants.
How should you choose a sustainability consultancy?
Five questions usually settle it.
How big is your business? Up to around 2,000 employees, a platform with expert support will generally do the same job for less time and money. Above that, and particularly with complex group structures or capital assets, a consultancy earns its fee.
What triggered the work? A client questionnaire, a public sector tender or B Corp recertification all have defined outputs. If the requirement is specific, buying a broad advisory engagement adds cost without adding much. If the requirement is strategic, a consultancy is the right call.
Is this a one-off or annual? Almost nothing in carbon reporting is a one-off any more. SECR is annual, Carbon Reduction Plans need refreshing, EcoVadis and CDP run on cycles. If you will repeat this every year, ask what happens to your data between engagements.
Do you need adjacent services? Life cycle assessments, biodiversity assessments, EHS systems, permitting and assurance are consultancy territory. If you need them, buy them from a firm that does them properly.
Who owns the data afterwards? The more useful question is what happens to your carbon data after the report is delivered. A maintained inventory, with the methodology and emission factors visible, is worth far more than a PDF you cannot update. This is the single biggest practical difference between the software-led and consultancy-led models.
How did we chose these sustainability consultants?
We selected providers based on their relevance to carbon accounting and sustainability reporting for UK and international businesses. We considered:
- Carbon accounting capability: whether the provider can measure Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and work against recognised standards such as the GHG Protocol.
- Delivery model: whether the work is delivered through consultancy, software, or a combination of both.
- Business size and complexity: the types of organisations each provider is designed to support.
- Reporting and compliance: the frameworks, standards and procurement requirements each provider supports.
- Specialist capabilities: areas such as product carbon footprints, life cycle assessment, carbon markets, assurance, nature and biodiversity.
- Ongoing support: whether organisations can maintain and update their carbon inventory year after year.
- Geographic coverage: whether the provider is primarily UK-focused or operates internationally.
This is not a ranking of which company is objectively "best". The right sustainability consultant depends on what your organisation needs the carbon accounting work to achieve.

How Seedling can help
We built Seedling for the businesses sitting in the gap: too complex for a spreadsheet or a self-serve calculator, and not big enough to justify a consultancy retainer.
You get a platform that guides your team through data collection, calculates a full-scope footprint against the GHG Protocol, and generates the reports you need for SECR, PPN 006, B Corp, EcoVadis, CDP, ISO 14064 and SBTi. Alongside it, you get a named carbon expert who scopes the work, solves the awkward data problems, reviews every calculation, and helps you build a reduction plan you can act on.
More than 500 businesses use Seedling, over 500,000 tonnes of CO2e have been measured on the platform, and 95% of clients stay with us year on year.
