The carbon impact of legal advice
You want to play your part in tackling the climate crisis, and engage your clients and team in a way that's genuine, but it's tricky to know where to start. What does environmental sustainability mean for you as a law firm?
The first step is getting to grips with what your impact actually is by measuring your carbon footprint. Practically, this means collecting data you hold on the things you do as a business, and translating it into a carbon impact using the rules set out in the GHG Protocol (the gold standard for carbon accounting).
Once you understand your footprint, you can make informed choices to reduce it - from how you travel, to engaging your team, and evaluating the products you buy.
If this sounds like a steep learning curve, we're here to help.

FAQs
Your questions answered.
What are the key sources of emissions for law firms?
Law firms typically have relatively low Scope 1 and 2 emissions (e.g. heating, electricity), but Scope 3 can be significant—especially from business travel, commuting, remote working, purchased services, and use of digital tools. Cloud-based legal tech platforms and office suppliers can also contribute.
How do we measure emissions if we don’t manufacture or produce anything?
Seedling focuses on service-based carbon footprints, helping you track emissions from travel, IT, suppliers, and workspace usage. Our activity-based method gives a clear, accurate picture of your firm’s impact—without needing in-house sustainability expertise.
Why should a law firm report its carbon emissions?
Sustainability is becoming essential for client expectations, public sector contracts (e.g. PPN 06/21), and ESG alignment. Reporting your carbon footprint shows leadership, supports B Corp or ISO 14001 goals, and strengthens your firm’s position in an increasingly climate-conscious legal market.
