Overview

EnvirotechFM had a genuine commitment to sustainability, but no formal, data-driven carbon management process in place. Operating across multiple UK and Ireland sites, with a workforce largely based at client locations rather than fixed offices, they faced some specific data challenges that had made getting started feel difficult. Working with Seedling, they measured a full carbon footprint, achieved Seedling certification, and published a Climate Transition Plan - all within a month.

"Sustainability isn't just a box to tick - it's a way we protect our communities, support our clients, and future-proof our business."

About EnvirotechFM

Envirotech Facilities Management Ltd (EnvirotechFM) is a UK and Ireland based facilities management company, with offices in Birmingham, London, and Dublin. Founded in 2018, the business has grown to 70 team members across maintenance, projects, cleaning, energy management, operations, and ESG compliance. The team deliver integrated solutions covering everything from safety and compliance to technical building services and project management. EnvirotechFM also offers environmental quality monitoring through their WellSPACE platform.

In November 2025, EnvirotechFM became a B Corp certified company, one of a small handful of UK facilities management businesses to hold B Corp certification.

"EnvirotechFM shares a commitment with Seedling to using business as a force for good."

The Objective

EnvirotechFM's goal was to put a formal, data-driven carbon reduction plan in place, grounded in a complete picture of emissions across the whole business. As a B Corp, reporting on emissions is part of maintaining their certification. But the commercial case was equally clear: clients increasingly want to work with partners who can demonstrate their own commitment to decarbonisation, not just talk about it.

“We are ahead of the curve when it comes to ESG compliance, so we can help our clients to make sure that their building is compliant in every shape and form possible.”

The Challenge

Measuring emissions in facilities management comes with some specific complications. For EnvirotechFM, three things made it genuinely difficult:

  • Rented, partially occupied offices: without direct control over energy bills, getting accurate utility data for Scope 1 and 2 emissions felt like an obstacle from the start
  • A mobile workforce: the majority of employees work at client sites rather than a fixed company location, making travel and on-site emissions harder to quantify
  • No obvious hotspots: as a services business without a manufacturing footprint, it was less clear where emissions were concentrated or what actions would make a meaningful difference
"While we were committed to sustainability, we didn't have a formal, data-driven carbon reduction plan in place before partnering with Seedling. Our intention to act sooner was limited by the lack of a structured approach and tools that could handle our operational complexity."

Why EnvirotechFM Chose Seedling

EnvirotechFM needed a solution that could handle complexity without requiring significant dedicated sustainability resource. Seedling's combination of intuitive software and hands-on expert support was the deciding factor.

"We chose Seedling because of their expertise in guiding complex businesses through practical carbon management and their ability to make sustainability actionable. Being B Corps ourselves, we appreciated working with a partner who shares our values and understands the importance of integrity in environmental reporting."

How Seedling Helped

Seedling supported EnvirotechFM across every stage of the process, combining a carbon management platform with hands-on guidance from a carbon specialist.

1) Footprinting a mobile workforce

Seedling's employee commuting and travel survey made it straightforward to capture emissions data from a largely mobile workforce - one of the data challenges that had previously felt hardest to solve.

2) Handling imperfect utilities information

For rented partially occupied offices where metering wasn't possible, floor-space and FTE-based estimates provided a credible basis for utility emissions. Not perfect data, but a defensible and actionable starting point.

3) Measuring supply chain impact with spend and surveys

Scope 3 emissions were calculated using spend data, giving a solid baseline without needing detailed figures from every supplier. EnvirotechFM are now preparing to roll out Seedling's supplier survey to improve that accuracy year-on-year. This is the kind of iterative approach that makes carbon measurement manageable in practice.

4) A clear, measurable reduction pathway

With EnvirotechFM’s baseline footprint in place, the next step was to build a realistic decarbonisation plan, with clear reduction targets and timelines across key areas including energy usage, fleet travel, and procurement. The output was a published Climate Transition Plan - a visible and credible commitment that EnvirotechFM can point to with clients and partners.

5) Tools to track progress and engage the team

Seedling’s carbon management platform gave EnvirotechFM's team the ability to visualise their impact and track progress, making it easier to bring staff and stakeholders along. Achieving Seedling Certification gave the business a recognised and credible way to showcase their environmental commitment.

"The combination of guidance, platform usability, and support from the Seedling team was invaluable for a business of our size and structure. A big thank you to our account manager Henry for being our guiding hand whenever we required it!"

The Impact

The results came faster than EnvirotechFM had anticipated. Within one month of starting with Seedling, the business had completed its first full-scope carbon footprint, achieved Seedling Certification, and published a Net Zero Roadmap. The impact has also extended to their supply chain.

"Contractors are now more aligned with our sustainability goals, leading to collaborative initiatives to reduce emissions on-site."

Looking Ahead

"Working with Seedling has fundamentally changed our approach to carbon management. We now view emissions reduction as an ongoing operational strategy rather than a one-off initiative."

Carbon management is now operational for EnvirotechFM: a data-backed plan that feeds directly into business decisions around procurement, travel policy, and supplier selection, rather than relying on intention alone. The immediate next step is sending out Seedling's supplier survey to begin collecting accurate emissions data from their supply chain, replacing the spend-based estimates used in the first footprint with more precise, supplier-specific figures, improving the accuracy of Scope 3 reporting year on year.

EnvirotechFM's Advice to Other Businesses

Jeff Smith, Director at EnvirotechFM, has clear advice for other businesses in a similar position:

"Start with measurement - understand your footprint before setting targets. Use tools like Seedling that simplify complexity and engage your whole team early. Sustainability becomes much more achievable when it's structured, actionable, and part of everyday operations."
