Helping Janea Systems Report Carbon Data to Microsoft

Background on the Business
Can you give a quick intro to your business? What do you do, and who do you serve?
Janea Systems are a fully remote software development consultancy. We primarily serve Fortune 500 companies in the United States of America.
Why is reducing your carbon footprint important to your team and your clients/partners?
We must be conscious about our emissions and have plans to reduce them by 2030 to stay compliant with client requirements. Our carbon footprint is important to our clients because of their sheer size and therefore their impact on the environment.
The Challenge
What were the biggest challenges you faced when trying to measure and reduce your emissions?
We needed to report carbon data and a decarbonisation plan to our client, Microsoft. We needed the output to be high quality and credible, but didn’t have loads of time to dedicate to measuring emissions. Additionally, we had to work with a third party that is qualified to provide us with a report that matches Microsoft’s requirements.
How Seedling Helped
What made you choose Seedling?
Seedling’s software plus support model meant the process wasn’t too time intensive for us as a busy team.
How did Seedling help you tackle the challenges you were facing?
Seedling handled the key reporting outputs in the specific format we needed for Microsoft, including metrics like Service Level Accounting (SLAs) and Total Company Emissions.
What specific features, tools, or support did you find most valuable?
An important feature was their employee survey, which helps you get data on commuting and working from home easily, rather than just using average data.
Our team is remote-only, so sending out the survey was really important in helping us give an accurate emissions report to Microsoft. Seedling will also be able to help with our emissions reduction plan in the coming years.
The Impact
Can you share any key results or milestones?
We were able to report emissions data and Net Zero targets within our deadline. Our calculations were approved by Microsoft and we are compliant for the next 12 months.
The fact that our data and calculations were checked by Seedling as a third party gave us confidence in the output, as well as making the process smoother.
Looking Ahead
What are your next steps in reducing emissions?
Our next steps in reducing emissions is to figure out how we embed strategies across all levels of the company. This is a tricky situation as a fully remote team - based on our footprint data, our focus will be company events, travel and other large areas of spend in our supply chain.
