What is Scope 3 and why does it matter?
Scope 3 covers all indirect emissions in your value chain - from the goods and services you buy, to business travel, employee commuting, and what happens to your products at end of life. For most businesses, Scope 3 accounts for more than 70% of total emissions, so any credible Net Zero strategy has to include it.
Which Scope 3 categories do I need to measure?
The GHG Protocol defines 15 Scope 3 categories, split between upstream (e.g. purchased goods, business travel, waste) and downstream (e.g. use of sold products, investments). Not all will be material to your business. Seedling's assessment helps you identify which categories matter most and focuses your effort accordingly.
What data do I need to measure Scope 3?
It varies by category, but typically includes supplier spend data, business travel records, freight volumes, and employee commuting information. Your Seedling adviser will tell you exactly what to collect based on your business, and will help you use approved estimates where primary data isn't available.
What if my suppliers don't share emissions data?
This is common. Where supplier-specific data isn't available, Seedling uses spend-based or industry-average emission factors drawn from recognised databases. We also provide supplier engagement templates to help you start collecting primary data over time.
